Piracy Challenge Competition – Terms and Conditions
The Media Smart competition is open to students of secondary schools in the UK, who are aged between 11 and 14 years old in September 2020.
The prize draw is open from Monday 9th November 2020 to Thursday 1st April 2021, and winning submissions will be drawn after the close date. The winners will be selected from all eligible entries.
The following constitutes one entry:
• A photograph or scan of an entrant’s storyboard submitted by a teacher by email with an accompanying completed submission form.
• A video submitted by a teacher by email, with an accompanying completed submission form.
• Any other image or record of a student’s work relating to the Media Smart Piracy resources.
Individual students / teams can enter as many examples of their work as they wish.
Students may work on their entry alone, or in a team of up to 5 students in total.
Students who are related to Media Smart and supporting partners’ employees may enter the prize draw, but no reference can be made to this in the entry.
Storyboard entries can be made by email and must be submitted by a teacher with an accompanying submission form.
There is a maximum file size of 10MB for storyboards submitted by email.
Storyboards must not feature entrants’ full names – only their first name(s) / team name, school year and school.
Storyboards must not feature photographs or names of real people.
Storyboards must not feature brand names or logos.
Storyboards must not feature the name or image of any celebrity or real person.
Film entries must be submitted via email as set out above.
Videos can be uploaded to a school’s social media account, but a link with submission form needs to be sent to Media Smart. Personal social media accounts must not be used.
Videos must be no longer than 3 minutes.
Videos must not feature the name of any person. Avoid featuring other people in your film who have not given their consent. Avoid any identifying information in the film.
Videos must not feature the name or image of any celebrity or real person.
Videos must not feature music owned by other people.
Video scripts must not feature brand names.
Entries must be submitted by a teacher or other member of school staff, via email.
Teachers will be asked to supply their own contact information via the submission form, which will be used to contact them in the case of any queries about entries, or to notify them if any of their students’ entries are successful.
Storyboards should include entrants first name(s) or team name only, school year and school on the accompanying submission form.
By submitting entries to the Media Smart competition, you confirm that for each entry submitted your students are the only author of the work and that it is their original work. All entries must be the entrant’s own original work, and must not defame or breach any copyright, including artwork, imagery, music and brand names.
Selection of winner
The winners will be selected from all eligible entries received and chosen at random. The winning entries are final, there is no appeal system and no correspondence will be entered into.
Prizes will be given out after Thursday 1st April 2021. Current prizes available can be found on the Media Smart website www.mediasmart.uk.com/piracy-competition
The contact teacher of winning students will be notified by email after Thursday 1st April 2021 (using the email details provided by the teacher on the entry form).
No cash or alternative prizes will be available.
Unclaimed prizes: if for any reason the winner cannot be contacted for one month after the winners’ announcement, or is unable to collect the prize, a different winner will be selected.
Media Smart will not be responsible for any inability of a prize winner to take up the specified prize.
Media Smart reserves the right in their reasonable discretion to substitute any such gift, prize or item with a prize or item of equal or greater value.
By entering the prize draw, teachers give agreement for the details of winners and their entries to be shared via the www.mediasmart.uk.com website and associated media channels.
Media Smart reserve the right to publish entries as and where deemed appropriate using the first name of child and school name. This could include, but is not exclusive to, Media Smart’s websites, and Media Smart’s own managed social media pages and offline materials. Together with the social media channels and websites for Media Smart’s partner in the programme, the Industry Trust for IP Awareness.
The winners may be requested to participate in publicity connected with the programme.
Schools will be required to give permission on behalf of the winners’ parent / carers for the winners’ first name, school and home town to be used for publicity purposes. The contact teacher must acknowledge the email and secure permission within 72 hours. If acknowledgment is not received by this date, or permission is not given, new winners, and therefore new winning schools, will be selected.
The copyright and any other IP right arising in connection with any entry shall remain with individual creators and use of any entry by Media Smart or the Industry Trust shall be limited to that provided for in these terms and conditions.

This competition is governed by English Law and is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
Media Smart UK reserves the right to change or cancel this prize draw at any stage and without prior notice, if it deems necessary, or if circumstances arise outside of its control.
